Organization: Corona has slowed the countries’ return of their children from the Syrian camps
(Monitor)
The “Save the Children” human rights organization said that the world’s preoccupation with facing the Corona pandemic has unacceptably slowed the return of foreign children living in camps in northeastern Syria to their countries of origin during 2020.
The organization indicated that nearly 27,500 children are waiting to be repatriated, in light of the rapid deterioration of living conditions in the camps.
And it called on countries that have nationals in the camps to intensify efforts to return them, with special priority given to sick cases.
The data collected by the organization showed that the number of children returned from northeastern Syria decreased to an estimated 200 children in 2020, compared to 685 the previous year.
To date, 975 children have been repatriated from Syria since 2017, 70% of whom returned to their countries in 2019 alone.
