Human Rights calls for a fair distribution of the Corona vaccine in Syria

Today, Tuesday, the Human Rights Organization stressed the need for international relief organizations to obtain support from the Damascus government to distribute the “emerging corona virus” vaccine, in all areas of the conflicting forces in Syria.

The organization’s report stated, “The failure of the United Nations Security Council to enter cross-border aid in northeastern Syria also means that there is no guaranteed channel to distribute the vaccine to two million people.”

The organization stressed the need for a wider and more equitable distribution of the emerging coronavirus vaccines throughout Syria, including areas outside the Damascus government.

“Those who supply Syria with vaccines should do their best to ensure that Corona vaccines reach the most vulnerable, regardless of where they are in the country,” said Sara Al-Kayali, a Syria researcher at the organization.

She indicated that the Syrian government “has never been shy about withholding health care as a weapon of war,” and warned that “practicing the same games with the vaccine undermines the global effort to control the spread of the epidemic.”

And she added, “Between the great destruction of the health infrastructure by the Syrian government during the conflict, and the lack of reliable aid, distribution of the Coronavirus vaccine in Syria will be very difficult even without the government’s discriminatory approach to providing assistance.”

According to Kayali, it is still too early to provide guarantees that everyone inside Syria will receive the vaccine in a fair way.

It is noteworthy that the Syrian government agreed last week to join the “Kovacs” initiative through the World Health Organization.
